You Can Save This Baby

Of the over 100 babies who are abandoned each year in Texas, about 16 will be found dead. An unknown number of murdered babies are never found. There is a solution. A Texas law provides a responsible alternative to mothers who might otherwise abandon, harm or murder a newborn child. It states that a parent may leave an unharmed infant, up to 60 days old, at any hospital or fire station with “no questions asked.” This law is nicknamed "The Baby Moses Law" from the ancient story of baby Moses who was placed in a wicker basket by his mother to be saved from death and who then grew up to become an important person in history.

A special message from our Executive Director....

Dear Friends of Baby Moses Dallas, 

            We appreciate your help. Since 2004, Baby Moses Dallas has educated the public about the Texas Safe Haven “Baby Moses” Law that encourages mothers who might otherwise harm her baby to turn over the child to medical or rescue personnel. Through our efforts, State prescribed signs have been placed at nearly all Fire Stations and Hospitals in Dallas County. We have distributed thousands of pieces of educational materials to hospitals, fire stations, schools, community fairs, as well as copies of our Public Service Announcement; plus we’ve done numerous interviews with the Media. The number of “dumpster” or abandoned babies has been reduced, but it still happens too often.
            How rewarding it has been to see that the message of the Texas Safe Haven/Baby Moses law has lessened potential violence against innocent babies. According to our own records, over 35 babies have been saved across Texas since 2006—the first year they kept record of this—many of those were in Dallas County.
            We’ve  also presented training to fire departments and hospitals in and around Dallas County; and, because of our web presence and willingness to share materials, we have been in contact with organizations all across Texas, and even as far away as Tasmania, Australia.
            Consequently, our expenses for the printing of these materials, postage, and/or mileage to deliver them or do presentations have eaten through our intitial grants and donations! That is why we need your help now.

The law allows a mother to hand over a baby to personnel at a fire station or hospital and walk away -- no questions asked.

Since the legislature provided no funds to publicize this law, privately funded non-profit groups in every metropolitan area in Texas have instituted public awareness campaigns. In Dallas County this group is called Baby Moses Dallas.

Our basic goal is to prevent violence and abuse against unwanted babies. The two ways we're addressing this goal are by providing state mandated signs to all designated Safe Haven sites in Dallas County (hospitals and fire stations) and  making the public aware of the law through advertising and education initiatives. Your tax deductible donation can help save a child.
